Understanding the Basics
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are a highly-versatile, durable, and long-lasting method of fixing cosmetic dental issues. They are designed to fit over your existing teeth and cover up the front chewing surface with a strong, porcelain ceramic material. This material looks just like part of your natural teeth and addresses most cosmetic issues.
Veneers can be used to treat a wide variety of cosmetic dental issues including small and misshapen teeth, crooked or uneven teeth, gaps, minor chips, and severe teeth staining that won’t respond to teeth whitening. However, veneers are not intended to treat damaged teeth. Restorative treatments like fillings and dental crowns are usually required for teeth that have been damaged by decay or oral trauma.
The Placement Process
For Veneers
After Dr. Nicole Messenger has approved you for treatment, placing veneers typically requires only two appointments at Messenger Family Dentistry.
At your first treatment, your teeth will be prepared for veneers. Dr. Messenger will clean your mouth and numb the treatment area. Once you are numb, she will remove a thin layer of enamel from each one of your teeth that will be receiving a veneer. This must be done to ensure a seamless, perfect fit. Next, you will have impressions taken of your teeth. We’ll send these impressions to one of our partner dental labs, where your veneers will be custom-made.
This takes 2-3 weeks, so you will be sent home with a set of temporary veneers in the meantime. Once your permanent veneers arrive at Messenger Family Dentistry, we will schedule your follow-up appointment. At this appointment, Dr. Messenger will check each of your veneers to make sure that they fit perfectly. Then, each one will be bonded into place permanently, restoring your smile.
How Long Do
Veneers Last?
This depends on how well you care for your veneers. With proper care, your veneers can easily last 10-15+ years. This makes them a long-lasting and durable cosmetic dental treatment.
Veneers are a low-maintenance cosmetic treatment, but to keep your veneers healthy and strong, there are a few precautions you should take. Continue to brush and floss properly and see Dr. Messenger every six months for a cleaning and checkup. You should also avoid chewing very hard foods (ice, almonds etc.) and non-food objects (pens, pencils, fingernails) with your veneers. This could crack or dislodge them. Instead, chew hard foods with your molars which are stronger. You should also not use your teeth as tools to help you do things like tear open packages. It is important to protect your veneers by investing in a high-quality night guard if you grind your teeth, and a sports mouthguard if you play contact sports.
